🏝🛝The Types of Environments🛝🏝

Welcome 👦👧boys and girls to another class. Today, we will be going on an adventure where we will be exploring the topic: The Types of Environments. Read all given information and do the activities below.

Types of Environments

What is an Environment?

An environment is everything around us. It includes living things (plants, animals, people) and non-living things (air, water, soil). Environments can be very different from each other.

  • Flora: All the plants that live in a particular area or ecosystem. The word "flora" comes from the name of a Roman goddess of flowers. Flora is always biotic (living).
    • Fauna: All the animals that live in a particular area or ecosystem. The word "fauna" comes from the name of a Roman goddess of animals. Fauna is always biotic (living).

    Simple way to remember:

    • Flora = Plants (think "Flora has flowers")
    • Fauna = Animals (think "Fauna has feet")

1. Terrestrial Environments (Land)
These are environments on land. They depend on the amount of rain and the temperature.

  • Forests: Areas with many trees. They can b
e rainy (like a rainforest) or have cooler seasons.
  • Grasslands: Large areas covered mostly in grass. They are often called savannas or prairies.
  • Deserts: Very dry areas. They get very little rain. It is very hot during the day and can be cold at night.
  • Mountains: High land with steep sides. It gets colder as you go higher. Animals here have thick fur or can climb well.

2. Aquatic Environments (Water)
These are environments in water. They can be freshwater or saltwater.

  • Freshwater: Water that has no salt. This includes rivers, lakes, and ponds.
  • Saltwater (Marine): Water that has salt. This includes oceans and seas. Coral reefs are a special type of saltwater environment.
  • Wetlands: Areas where the ground is always wet or covered in shallow water, like swamps and marshes.

3. Artificial (Man-Made) Environments
These are places created or changed by humans.

  • Urban Areas: Cities and towns with many buildings, roads, and people.
  • Farmlands: Areas where humans grow crops and raise animals for food.

How do living things survive?
Every living thing has adaptations (special features) to survive in its environment. For example, a cactus has thick stems to store water in the desert. A fish has gills to breathe in water.
